Following the completion of his Bachelors of Science Degree in Health and Physical Education at Lock Haven University, Mr. Childs returned to his home area of Corning, N.Y. where he taught and coached in the public school system for 5 years. He then moved to Elmira College where he served in the administration of the Student Affairs Department and coached the Women's Soccer team while completing his Masters of Science Degree in Education. It was at this time that Mr. Childs began to work with the impact of alcohol and drugs on our nation. Mr. Childs is a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor and has served in the full range of treatment and prevention. Initially starting out as the adolescent counselor for Steuben County Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services in 1987 and advancing to Clinical Coordinator for Mercycare Alcoholism Treatment Center, Hornell (MATCH) and then Executive Director of the Steuben Council on Alcoholism. In 1992, after working in the field of alcoholism and chemical dependency for 5 years, Mr. Childs began his journey in the martial arts. Initially studying Tai Chi Chuan under Masters Joi Eden and Betty Sun of Stillness in Motion, Hicksville, N.Y. Mr. Childs began to feel the tremendous change the martial arts brings to a person's life.
In 1994 Mr. Childs began studying with Master Ken K. Kuek. During his years of training Mr. Childs has competed, officiated and coached in many nationally recognized tournaments and won awards as Most Dedicated Student, Most Improved Student, Black Belt of the Year, Instructor of the Year, the Kuek's Martial Arts Academy Spirit Award, the President's Award and the highest award in the Kwok Wu Chuen System the Kent K. Kuek Award. In 1998 Mr. Childs achieved the rank of First Degree Black Belt in the Kwok Wu Chuen System, began working as a Program Counselor for Kuek's Martial Arts Academy and was appointed Assistant Instructor. Mr. Childs now holds the rank of Third Degree Black Belt and is a Senior Instructor in the Kwok Wu Chuen System. He has held positions as Secretary for the International Martial Arts Council and Chairperson for the Kwok Wu Chuen Martial Arts Association Black Belt Board
Mr. Childs has seen tremendous transformations in those who come to train and believes the Martial Arts to be a virtually untapped resource in the fight against alcohol and drug abuse.
